Frequently Asked Questions

When should I arrive for class?

Show up early! Arrive at least 15 minutes before the start of the class. This gives you a chance to find a spot without rushing and center yourself before practice.

I’m new to yoga. How long before I feel comfortable with the poses?

Give yourself at least 10 classes to begin to get comfortable with yoga. Like any new physical activity, it’s normal to feel a little sore when you begin using your muscles in a different way. It’s also normal to feel a little overwhelmed at first! Keep showing up and taking care of yourself. You’ll get stronger with every practice.

What do I need to bring to class?

Bring a mat, towel, and water to Vinyasa classes. For less than the cost of a pair of running shoes, you can invest in a quality mat that will last many years. Ask us about a mat that’s right for you. Towels help put a hygienic layer underneath you, can be used to cover your eyes in savasana, and add traction during postures. Hydrate with water before, during and after yoga!

How warm is it in the studio?

The studio is kept at between 78°F to 82°F for Vinyasa classes. Heat helps the detoxification process and helps warm up your muscles for your safety. Yin, Hatha, and all our other yoga classes are not heated.

What should I wear to class?

Wear clothing that is comfortable and moves freely. Avoid big, baggy clothing. It’s bound to end up around your head rather than covering your body. Most students prefer to wear a shirt that fits close enough to the body and is long enough that it doesn’t ride up or fall over the face during inverted poses.

What if I can’t keep up or need to rest during class?

If you get tired, take a child’s pose. You can take rest whenever you like; a child’s pose is to lie down on your back or belly. This can be done at any time during your practice and is a sign of strength. Resting often gives others permission to do the same.

What else should I do when I arrive for class?

Grab a block and strap when you come into the studio. It’s helpful to keep the blocks close to the front of your mat.

Remove shoes at the door/ under the benches and place belongings in the cubbies as you enter the loft space. Shoes are removed as a sign of respect for what is considered sacred space.

Can I have my phone with me during class?

Turn off your cell phone and leave it in the cubby. It’s tempting to keep it with you near your mat—we know!—but it isn’t possible to be fully present in your practice if you’re thinking about checking your cell.
